Backyard Rambling

Went for a stroll through the woods over the weekend and then again at school this week.

There were a number of familiar fungi. There were also some that were growing in unfamiliar locations.

Usually, shelf mushrooms grow on the side of a tree, not on the trail. Same for coral mushrooms which usually clump on or near the base of a tree.

Here were some growing in the middle of the trail. Maybe there was some buried wood under the sand.

Here is another brightly colored 'shroom.

When they get old, other fungi cleans up the mess.

Puffballs are edible when they are all white like these small ones.

Once they show any color, leave them for the wildlife. Here is one that has already scattered it's spores.

The students at school found these large fruiting bodies. (The majority of a fungus is below ground, or just below the leaflitter.)

These were in better shape the day before, I was told. I was surprised at how hard and solid these were. Not at all like the fragile ones I usually find.
